Cambridge Society Berkshire Branch 2003 - Saturday

Today started with a quick tour of around Bridgnorth. We parked in the Severn Valley Railway car park and crossed over the road using the foot bridge to where the remains of the castle stand. Parts of the castle had been excavated by the Time Team on in March 2001.

First a quick stop at St Marys church, then on into the town centre to see the New Market Building built in 1855. Paid a visit to the Town hall where there was some wonderful stained glass windows.

Spent some time in St.Leonard's Church. Then on down the Cartway to catch the Cliff raily back up. Quickly over to the Station to catch the train.

With our lunches we caught the train. A diesel train, not a steam train. Very busy today as it was Thomas the tank engine day. Short trip up the line to Country Park Halt. Here we got out and walked to the visitor centre. The more able walkers got out earlier for a longer walk along the river. Very nice walking and great to have the train to take you to the next stop.

Had our lunch at the visitor centre, and then a tour of the Park by the guide. He was one of the original people to set the place up. The area was all slag heaps from the Alveley Colliery, and now was becoming very beautiful.

After the tour walked back over the Colliery bridge and then on th Highley Station to catch a Steam engine back to Bridgnorth.

Back at the hotel it was time for dinner, and then a talk about Ironbridge by Ken Jones, a guide and author of an Ironbridge book.
